Been noticing legs of my scarlet hermits lately and trying to find out who the culprite is. Tonight I caught a peppermint shrimp munching on one of em. <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" /> I received 2 of these crab killers from SWF - anyone know a way to catch em for removal?

Hi Ren,
Since peppermint shrimp are scavengers, do you think they may have been just doing thier job? Legs come off hermits all the time during hermit fights, predator attacks, etc. And when food lies around, any taker will grab it.
EDIT: Happy b-day Whipple! Glad to see you can still type at 102!

Well, the shrimpy wasn't munching on a leg. It was munching on a fresh kill. It dropped it and ran when the light hit it, lil bugger. I'm pretty sure that the peppermints are the culprits. If I can catch em for removal gonna drop em into my quarentine tank.

Never heard of a peppermint taking down a hermit. But I suppose there's a first time for everything. :)
BTW, regarding QT tank, remember shrimp and all inverts will die in copper or hyposalinity water.
Cheers,

Are you sure it wasn't the exoskeleton of the hermits? That's how crabs grow. They shed their old skin and I've thought my crabs have died before too.

i seriously doubt tha tthe shrimp did it
but, as mentioned earlier, i guess anything is possible
something else may be doing the deed, and they are cleaning up, or as mentioned, molting or but i would have to see the shrimp actually kill one to believe it

Quarentine tank is just that got a seperate hospital tank for treatments ;) And nope not a exoskelleton- its body was being munched. I'm thinking that the hermits are getting caught when leaving shell? Poss to look for bigger home and wammo - lunchtime.
I have 2 Peppermints and they were together -prolly tagteaming the poor crab. the one that was eating dropped it and ran when hit with the light. Guilt all over it lol
