ok so here we go, i get home from working at the ER at 4am. i look into my tank with my pen light like always to check everyone out before i go to bed. all is well. i wake up at 730am to get ready for my dentist appointment and smell burning plastic

apparently the rio pump that goes from my sump to my refugium exploded during the 3 1/2 hrs i was sleeping. all 7 of my fish are dead, my eibli angel, hawaiian blue puffer, 2 black and white saddleback clowns, scooter blenny, starry blenny and long nose hawkfish. i also lost my blood shrimp. but for some reason all my corals survived so i rescued them and took them to my moms 44g corner tank.
so now my 55g is sitting around with hermit crabs and snails. i called my LFS once they opened and told me to bring in a water sample and my dead pump. the only good news is that its still under manufacture warranty so if it is indeed a device malfunction i get a check cut out to me for my loss. it helps but still doesnt make me feel better, its hard watching your last fish die infront of you when its your favorite one

Wow. I am so sorry to hear that.

I have a tank at work in my office and just started one here at home. My greatest fear when I open my office door in the mornings is that something happened during the 14 hours that I wasn't there. My baby n-a-k-e-d ocellaris pair is in that tank and I have gotten so attached to them. If something ever happened to them, or the rest of my "babies", I would be soooo sad. I can't imagine watching them die. My thoughts are with you.

Well skipper, that right there is enough info for me to never use a Rio. I have always heard they are crappy PH's, but never to that magnitude! I am sorry for your loss, I hope you do get the check. I hope like heck they don't simply offer you a replacement PH.

Wow, sorry to hear. I know how you feel, I just lost my tank to a fire 1 month ago. My power strip caught fire and burned all of the power cords behind my tank. I was awakened by my fire alarm at 2:30 in the morning. I'm still morning my loss. I think it has made me more obsessed with my tank, at least that’s what my wife tells me. Good luck and keep your head up, you’ll be back up and running in no time.

I think Rio will most likely give you a new powerhead. I will be shocked and thankful if you get the $$$$ for the fish. But I hope you do. It's only right.

aquaferg- yea i figure ill at least get the money for the rio, but the lfs guy said the other stuff and that he has paper work for that sort of thing so its worth a try.
tizzo- yea it was my only rio all my others were maxi jet 1200. no more rios for me!
yea im thinking of switching to a fish only tank. i may just let mom keep my corals over at her place. but its all up in the air right now

Wow!! Wow frustrating. You are right, the check to replace stuff helps, but you can't replace the months you have already put into your tank.

Gah! Sorry to hear about the losses! That's awful. I have consistent paranoia of some device in my tank malfunctioning... This doesn't help, lol.
I hope everything works out as far as the warrantee goes and you get set back up as soon as possible.

I had th esame panic attack last night when I came home. Apparently one of my snails had knocked down my frogspawn, which than ladned on top of my brain coral. Both were trying to kill eachother. Low and behold they are btoh loking pretty beat up today.

I just woke up to that this morning between my plate coral and my tubs blue polyp birdsnest

Unfortunately, the plate coral wins almost any battle.

thanks, yea i pretty much have to start all over, cycle the tank with new water. ugh!
i have to clean out all the black gunk in my sump too, which was something i did about a month ago. so by friday ill be figuring out what im gonna do.
either fish only or folwr or reef. im sort of leaning towards fish only and letting my mom keep my devils hand, shrooms, colt and pulsing xenias
what do u guys think?
