I had/have the same problem, I had to syphone off the crud from my sand and start again---problems for me was my water source, the dreaded tap (full of trAtes and Phos)---at this point and time still using until I can get a RO/DI set up, but after I cleaned up the mess, I got the lawnmower blenny (algea blenny) as mentioned above, and I must say, its minimal now, this was just about a month ago

love showing off my tank now! But besides that, you need to find the reason why its happening--for example water source? HTH

I had a terrible green hair algae problem and I thoroughly cleaned out all the algae buildup in my filters. I purchased a yellow tang really because I wanted one and he went to town on it. I've heard foxfaces are good green hair eaters as well. It seems to do a better job than the mower blenny (at least in my roomates tank). Also if you don't have any corals in high demand for light, reducing the amount of time the lights are on by a few hours can help too. Good luck.

Is your tank next to any windows or by direct sunlight? Do you have a protien skimmer? But some more crabs, a blenny, or snails. If the algae is on the glass then by a magnetic scrubber, they are awsome.:p

This may sound simple, but macro algae in my refugium has all but eliminated algae in my display tank.If you are serious about a reef, read up on refugiums. It is ,by far,the one single thing I have done ,that has given me the best results. If interested I will provide you with more details.Good luck.

I had algae once. Multiple types too. A long, long time ago. I switched to RO/DI water and bought some Mexican trochus snails and a blue linkia starfish. My algae was gone in a couple of days and has never returned. i had to get rid of the star because I could not feed him. What a machine! The trochus snails are by far the knig snails for cleaning. By the way, that lawnmower blenny will get HUGE. My linkia went through multiple types of algae, the slimy and the hairy. I had a dense carpet of green hair algae on the back glass that was about a good 3/4 of an inch long. It took the linkia 2 days to clear it out. Try these.

It comes w/ a filter sock which is how I used it. I have it in an Aquaclear 500 along w/ my carbon. My PO4 goes up at morning feeding and is gone by afternoon. All food has some or produces some PO4. I used this product because it was the only one I found that doesn't release anything harmful back to the tank when exausted. Check your PO4 weekly and replace when it is elevated. Others release toxins!!!!
