How old is your hydrometer? Are you using a glass hydrometer or a plastic floater? I have found that the plastic hydrometers accumulate salt over time and begin to show higher salinity readings than are real. My water showed 1.023 SG but when I bought a new hydrometer it showed 1.018. Low salinity can cause brown algae.

somehting else that can cause it if the filters used in the RO units need to be changed it will allow stuff to get by that would normally be filtered out. I would also try switching water for the next few top offs and see if that helps. if you have the ability to do so that is.

I have a Refractometer that I purchased for this site and did everything right to calibrate it, i check the salinity at least twice a week to make sure it is at 1.025.
Thanks

No I dont have a fuge, but I need to getone started. just trying to figure out how with my set up. I do use a 220 CSS in my sump, I never do anyother test except the basic Nitrite, Amm, Nitrate, PH test so today I will buy one for phosphate levels. Thanks for the info.

This will make it look better, but you need to look at your feeding/nutrients levels. Lower the nutrients in your tank and you will not have as much problems with the glass film.
