Hello Beth..... Or whomever is moderating today :)
OK so 80 gal tank with Rena 3 canister and a sump, skimmer, 100lbs sand, 150lbs of LR, 440watt VHOs.... 10 mo old tank with softs/LPS/SPS and a few fish.. ect
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Ammonia 0
PH 8.0 to 8.2 varies
Alk norm to high
Calcium 550 (aggg way too high I know)
Last week I noticed that I had a rusty colored algae growing on my rocks, it had bubbles (respiration). I had been over supplementing the tank I am sure so I stopped all supplements, cut back feedings and did a 10% water change by siphoning out the offending algae areas. This week it is still there, CA is still high and now more areas have the rusty, powdered agae with bubbles.
ANY BETTER IDEAS THAN WHAT I'm doing??
Thanks guys..........n gals

Sounds like cyrnobacteria. Reduce the lights to 3 hrs a day over the next week.
What type of lighting do you have?

Hey doc looks like ur having the same problem i just fixed. check ur phosphates they are gonna be high . expecially if u were over feeding. get 20 gallons of rodi water or distilled water and do that water change u need to remove a lot of water to get the phosphates out. but make sure everything matches exact salinity,ph,and temp due to the amount of water comming out. you may still see the alge after but it will starve out. clean ur filter real good too. and in about a week after u do this do it again. everything sould be ok after that. u really dont have to cut ur light cycle down that much expecially if u have corals. u can email me if u still have problems. vze207hq@verizon.net good luck

Also, how old are your lights? Old bulbs can spark a bloom. You said 10mo old tank.....might be time for new bulbs.

you can also lightly scrub the rock with a toothbrush (un used ofcourse) before u blow the rock off
