Your question brings up several other questions that need to be answered before someone can attempt to help you :). Are you cycling your tank? How long has it been running? What does the algae look like? Is it brown or green or another color?

if the tanks established, cut the light time back to 6-8 hours and look into changing out bulbs if they are older than 6 months.... and do you have an algae cleaning crew?

thank you Josh
Agree fully with what you say but with 55 gallon tank what would you recommend as a cleaning crew currently have hermits and turbos but probably not enough me thinks

What is your nitrate level?
What kind of water are you using?
How long have you had the tank running?
How old are the bulbs?

Yes, I do not believe in that method. You need to remove the source that is causing the algae, either bad bulbs, nitrates, phosphates from tap water, leaving the lights on excessively (more than 12 or 13 hours per day), not a good enough clean-up crew, not enough flow, etc.

nitrates are nearly at zero...and i just replaced my actinic just cause i thought it looked slightly dull... and the fixture itself is only two or three months old....

to be honest it makes my rocks look kind of cool but from what i have been reading i guess coraline will not form over the green algae....i think i have a sufficent clean up crew...i had ten hermints but my blue legs took out all my red legs so i have five or six now and i have a lawnmower blenny and four snails
