I have had a 55 gal salt water tank for a year now. I have a red growth that is hard to remove. It is on the live rock and on the glass. I also have a white growth on the rock that my daughter says looks like snot. Can you help me with this?
Thanks.......

Unfortunately no, my digital camera is on the fritz. I don't know else how to discribe it other than it looks round, and like a booger (another name my daughter uses to discribe it). These white things started showing up aproximately nine months after I started the tank. I can only asume it has to do with some kind of bacteria. This tank came from a friend of mine, and was previously established with the live rock and these things didn't exist.
I recently bought some phospate remover and have changed it once in the last four days. Do you think this might help with the coraline algea?:happyfish

Coraline algea is good for your tank. Phosphate remover will remove the food source of unwanted algeas. I used the phosephate remover when i first setup my 90 a couple of years ago with great success. When you use the phosphate remover keep in in for 48 hours then remove for 48 hours then put fresh phosphate remover in for another 48 hours and it should remove all of the phosphates. By removing the phosphate remover and letting 48 hours go by with none in it will give the live rock some time to let any phosphates leach out of the rock.

Thanks, of course that wasn't explained to me when I bought it. Actually the package didn't say anything about removing the stuff.

Yea the lfs guy I go to has been pretty good to me and hes the one who suggested me to do that. After you pull out the first run and let 48 hours go by check the phosphates and you will see the rocks leached some back out. Is the phosphate remover you got granular? That was the kind I used. Make sure you rinse it good in ro/di water before you put it in your filter.

If its coralline algea leave it alone! It will add color to your live rock. The little white things may be a sponge or something.
