Algea problem

My 28g tank is about 10 months old and I have a major algea problem. I have brown dust like algea growing on the glass and sand. It is easy to clean off but is unsightly. Is it harmful? Also, I have bright green and deep red thick and slimy looking algea growing on my LR and glass. After the light is on for awhile, I see bubbles all over it, I'm guessing oxygen. This algea is much more difficult to remove. Is this harmful? Fish seem fine. What causes this? How can I get rid of it? I only have one small snail. Do I need more?

Have you made any changes to your tank lately? New lighting? moved powerheads around? Changed your water source? Changed your photoperiod? Diatoms and cyanobacteria can result from several things. Tell us a little more about what's been going on with the tank lately.
