Alkalinity Levels

What does everyone recommend as a good alkalinity level. I hadn't checked mine in a while and now it is at 3.2 meq/l. I am sure this is high, and as a result my calcium levels have dropped to about 325-350, and it is proving hard to get them back up. I am sure that with water changes and reduction of Alkalinity buffers this will correct itself, but I was wondering at what alk level I should be aiming at as the "perferred" amount.

I believe my test kit suggests no more than 3. mine usually runs at 1. most of our saltwater buddies run from 1-2, 3 being the max.
