All-Glass Built In Overflows

Does anyone have any experience with the all-glass tanks which are pre-drilled (bottom) with their overflow kits? It looks practical; but, does it work?

I looked at their site and it looks like a decent design. You might get some gurgling noise problems, but those can be easily solved. Do a search for "Durso standpipe"

i have a 55gal. not too bad as my first aquarium ever. i figured it all out in no time. it does get loud. have had trouble finding pieces for the durso standpipe so i havent been able to quiet it down, i just deal with it, but the standpipe is recommended.

wamp had them on his 180. I have them on some tanks I do maintenance on. The only problem I have with them for a reef tank is the limited flow capacity. Around 1200-1400 GPH is all they will handle. I like the top and bottom skimming action from the actual overflow box, but if you do a deep sand bed, you may have problems with sand getting clogged in the bottom holes.

Thanks for the replys folks. I'm helping someone set up a reef tank and I'm looking to avoid the normal overflow box.

I have one on my 75gal., and it works great. I like it much better than the u-tube hang on type.

After some simple modification they work great. There's no gurgling, the float seems to eliminate that. I made the standpipe longer so the water didn't fall so far. The limiting factor in the flow rate is the size of the slots. I made mine longer. I also cut away 1/2" of the inside lip on the overflow. This allows more water to come up from the bottom. I have rocks keeping the sand away from the bottom slots.
Keep in mind that lowering the inside lip means about 10 more gallons overflowing after a power outage. This translates to a need for more sump capacity.
I've only used them for about 2 years but they have performed flawlessly with very little maintenance.
I do not use the foam prefilters and I pulled off the rubber lip on the inside.

I have one of these on my 90g reef tank. I don't get any noise from mine. If you want to go with a dsb you can do what I did there is a pic in the link. Just block the sand with a piece of plexi glass. If you want to know how I did it send me a e-mail to
