Hi I am wanting to start a small tank and will not be needing 20 pounds of LS. I don't want to get a big bag and let it go to waste so can I buy other kinds of sand instead? How about sand tha is ment for reptile pets?

As long as it's calcium carbonate sand, the reptile stuff should work, though the stuff I've seen costs 15 bucks for one LB.
How big of a tank are we talking? Most LFS's will sell LS from their tanks by the pound. You might think about that.

I think 20 lbs would be perfect in a 10 or 15. The average rule of thumb is 1 lb per gallon, and then after that is just getting better nitrification. I agree that buying a bag of SouthDown would be your best bet.
