I would very much like to get a Clam. I was told that you need MH 250W X 2. I have MH 175 X2 and I was hoping to have a clam. Do I have enough light? I also have two 55 Blue flourscents.
I was told by my lfs that I could not place him in the sand in my tank - it is 55 gal tall (36" deep).
Will a clam sit on top of a rock? I have a pile of live rock that sits 6-8" from the top of the water? Would that work for a clam? Will he stay there or fall off?

Depending on the type of clam you want you should be able to do some of the less light demanding ones. Also some clams like to burrow into rock, others the sand. I have a sq. sitting on the sand bed and he has been doing just fine, growing happily away. I have two others at the top of the rockwork closest to the mh bulbs. If your tank is 3 feet to the bottom probably isnt a good idea to put a clam that far down though. On rockwork some should be just fine.
Your clam looks good so far, and nice coloring :)

I dont see why not if its a 2x175 mh it would be fine you just might not get the color with the clam under a 250 mh crocea clams would rather be on the rock work then the sand bed they lock them selfs to the rock work with in a few days of placing them there but once they are locked into the rock work it is really hard to get them off so you want to make sure thats where you want them!!But for you i would try a squamosa are a derasa clam first and see how that goes they like the sand bed better and they are a lower light and a little tuffer clam but you also want a system thats been going for awhile as well..
