just seeing if I'm crazy, but I got a piece of dead rock that I picked up from the cayman islands - brought it home, boiled it in RODI water, then air dry = and it's been in my tank for like 5 months. It's starting to get the purple coraline on it now (although half of the rock is underneath sand).
I just got back from Aruba with some rock pieces I got from the beach and I did the same thing: boil it and put it in the tank. Am I crazy? Does anyone else do this? I thought that I read on another thread a long time back that in about a year it will become live.
this is okay right???

The only thing that makes live rock live is the bacteria poulation. The corraline is just a bonus. Given time any rock will become live so if you find something you like I think you are onto something.

No its not crazy. You could try just adding the rock next time. Especially if it doesn't smell. You just may be dealing with some sort of invert that survived.... And the rock will become live over time. Ive done it before. Youd never know a couple pieces i have were once barren.
