You could start a new tank with something like Amquel, but there are some drawbacks:
1. $$$$
2. hydroxymethlyculfonate smells, well, sulferous (rotten egg smell) - not pleasant at all.
3. There is a lowering of dissolved oxygen content, so circulation has to be pretty vigorous.
IMHO - it is easier and less costly to let nature do the job for you with some ammonium chloride (old school), or a rotting piece of fish.
