Can anyone tell what level of ammonia is too high during cycle period. I set up my 55 on Fri, with 45 lbs cured live rock, 50lbs sand, 40lbs live sand, got prizm skimmer going, and a filter going. Rock was from internet, over night shipping. Rock looked okay, and my buddy(reefer for 3 yrs) thought it looked great. Check ammonia today and it is off the chart. Im sure thats because of the die off from the rock, but is there a too high of a level of ammonia during the cycle period? Just wondering.

I am no expert but my ammonia also went off the chart and it came back down just fine. I think it just may take a little longer to cycle when you have more die-off. It has taken about 3 weeks for my tank and it's not quite done yet.

no such thing as too hig of ammonia nitrites or nitrates, during the cycle, let them all fly, that is part of the reason we do nto like to use fish for cycling, they do get very high, and you should let them mgo, they will fall on their own,
and i would turn off the skimmer for a while, runnig thta or doing water changes, during a cycle, IMO, only holds back the process
HTH and good luck
