Ammonia

I have two questions:
I have had my 250 setup with six damsels and a whole bunch of dead shrimp in my sump for about 3 weeks. I am still not showing any ammonia at this point. Just more time?
I have a 55 salt water as well I am getting a whole bunch of purple coraline. Is this a good thing?

I do not have any live rock and no casualties at this point.

I am cycling the tank. Doesn't it have to show up first before the rest of the process can take place?

with no LR, what are you using for the bacteria to colonize in?

I have a wet/dry trickle system with about 5 gallons of bioballs. I have a 40 gallon sump area with a mag 3600 pump.

Can anyone tell me if I am way off base here. Shouldn't I start seeing ammonia at some point?
