Sounds drastic to me. Not to come across as an expert in the field and not knowing all the details I wonder if maybe you added to many fish at once and extended your bio load. One thing I have learned is that you need to take your time and have patience with the cycle period. Add fish slowly. How large is your tank and how long has it been running?

Two things I would try to get a grip on right away....First what was/is the source of the ammonia....Second would be to understand fully the water chemistry of the system and take appropiate steps to bring things back under control.

Let the tank cycle again.
Do a water change when ammonia and nitrites read zero.
Start over with 1 fish.

Just read a post where you BOUGHT your tank on October 6th.
This means your tank was probably still cycling and this caused the ammonia spike.
As said before, cycle again and start again slowly.
Good luck
