And the water is cold...

Hello to all, I am starting to get ready for my first Saltwater tank and I believe I have a game plan that may get things moving. I just picked up a 20 gallon tank from Free cycle, a local internet trading site. The former owner had a salt tank and gave up. My plan is to start this tank as a "starter tank". I am planing on just getting the cycle going and get the tank stabilized, then, I will use some of this tank to jump start my 135 gallon tank and sump. After the 135G is up and running, the 20G will become a QT.
The reason I don't start the 135G to begin with is pretty simple, Cash flow
.
More than that, I am in the process of making Live rock for the 135G so this will get my wife to stop with the "I'm going to sell that thing" threats.

Just wanted to say hello and get some feed back on the game plan. I will add more info on the 20G as I get it set up.

Sounds like a good idea ,you can do the same in a storage bin or garbage can.If that doesn't work though tell her you really have some good home redecoration ideas.Tell her you read a article in SI that had some good sports theme ideas.Baseball bat stair railings, football door knobs, hockey stick refrigerator door handle,Neon beer lights.....that might throw her off track for awhile.

Classic newbie mistake, that never stops!

The only thing I have going is the fact she is in the "Finding Nemo" phase and wants a Clown fish and a Damsel. The reason for the threats is because I have put the project on hold for a while so I could do the research and get it right. I have to say I like the Forums here, They have been great for the research. I have also signed up on some other sites and since they will be "Deleted by management", I will refrain from posting their names.

As for the subject line, Its time to dive in.

O.K. Funny but true...When I first started my first saltwater tank my wife saw how much money I was putting out on this stuff so she came up with a plan she thought would make me cut back on spending...What ever money I spent on saltwater I had to give her the same amount in cash needless to say I have paid two times more for what ever I got for my tanks. It's the price I paid for what I love to do. BTW she doesn't do that to me anymore, but she has maybe 60 pairs of new shoes.

I always like to make my own stuff, a big time DIY'er. I wonder If you told her that anything she got had to be made the same way, If she would go for it...

Good idea but it would never work...What I did do was gave her a 8gal. biocube so far it's working.

OK, I got the 20 gallon up and started by ditching the under gravel filter. I rinsed the CC and and add 10 lbs of LR rubble. I kept the bio wheel HOB filter and only used a one side with a packaged filter. The other chamber I loaded with small pieces of LRR. I will keep this for a cycle kick start and later as a QT tank. By then, I will have added more Home made live rock to get the quantity up. I will post pics after I get the light fixed.
