Android devices have always had free upgrades as long as the carrier supported it. For WiFi only devices like the tablet you are getting, there is no charge for an update.
Upgrades and updates are different things.
Getting the newest OS is often offered but for only a limited time...My last desk top computer ran Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7...I was happy with the Vista and didn't upgrade, but after a few months decided to go ahead with Windows 7, by then the offer was off the table. If Android offers unlimited free upgrades for any divice running their software, it's truely the first of it's kind to do so I ever heard about. I admit I sure don't see any charges for 4.0 ICS...

Motorola has started locking new devices so they cant get updates to newer OS unless they push the update, but ICS 4.0 is still new so you are good there.
I think you will be very happy with the Xoom.

You're talking about 2 different companies and very different technologies here, Microsoft vs Google. MS always charges for upgrades. Google on the other hand has always released their OS upgrades for free but its up to the carriers to allow or disallow the update to go to their phones since the carriers always add a lot of their own stuff to the base OS.

Well, I went with the Android, so Micosoft does have some serious competition.

Not really, since they are in completely different markets unless you are dealing with search engines. Next year, when MS finally releases Windows 8 which will have a Tablet version is when we'll start to see some competition from MS, but Apple and Android are so deeply entrenched in the tablet market that it probably wont matter too much.

I never used anything but DOS back when we built our own computers and then we went to the Windows OS. I love micosoft word, the Android is supposed to have an app that will allow word, that would be something I really miss.

Check and see if Polaris Office is installed, if not, download it from the App Store. When you have an Office document (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) it will open them up.

Tablets and smartphones have cut into the home and small computer market significantly over the last year. Ninety percent of "computer" usage these days is performed online. There's not a requirement to have a large desktop where you're tied to a desk and a hardwire connection, when all you're doing is surfing the web, blogging, reading/replying to forums, Facebook, and Twitter. I built a high-end desktop a couple of years ago to play processor and graphic intensive games. I hardly use it for that purpose any longer. The majority of tasks I use it for now is using Office products and printing those documents. Everything else I do on a "computer" is now performed on my tablet or my smartphone. Microsoft has made an attempt with an OS on a smartphone, and everyone I know that has it has given mixed results regarding it over Android or Apple products. I personally think they're getting into the tablet market too late.

That's what I was told by others too... All I use my main computer for is printing stuff, otherwise it's all web surfing, even my art programs have all the graphics on the web to download. The internet has taken over.

For the 300 bucks, you can try to find galaxy tab.
If you don't mind doing a little research, you can also find HP Touchpad for about 175-200 range (16gb version) and have ICS already pre-loaded by a geek like myself (if they are like that) or you can do it yourself following a pretty simple guide.
I run through them alot so if you have any questions, please feel free to pm.
