Anemone vs. Powerhead

I have a large bubbletip an. in my 75 gallon reef. He decides to roam the tank about every 4-6 months. He will be footed down and appear happy for 4 to 6 months and one day he just decides to take a walk. The problem is, he always gets himself sucked into a powerhead. He did this tonight for the third tim in about a year and a half. I turn off the powerhead and he works his way off of the pw with what little tentacles he has left, and finds a place nearby to foot down while he heals. I know there has to be something you can put over the intake on a ph to keep these types of things from happening, but I can't find anything. If you have experienced this, please tell me what you did to prevent it from happening again. Thanks

check with whatever powerhead manufacturer you have and they should offer a sponge intake filter. if they don't, you could always rig one up with a regular household sponge and some rubber bands, although it will require frequent cleaning for your powerhead to work well. (i too lost my anemone to a powerhead. he wasn't as lucky as yours <img src="graemlins//dead.gif" border="0" alt="[dead]" /> )

Anemones have very soft bodies (like their jellyfish cousins) and can get sucked up into very small spaces. Roaming is a problem with anemones and you have to ask yourself why is it moving. Usuallly they move around when they are unhappy for some reason, i.e. poor lighting, poor water movement or too much water movement, inadequate feeding, poor water quality. The sponge suggestion is good, but you have to be meticulous in your cleaning! You're lucky you have a resilient anemone, usually all you get after a powerhead episode is goo and or disease from the damaged tissue!

they are filled with water and can deflate if they want to. mine got completely sucked in, and it was pretty big compared to the intake grating on the powerhead. all the tentacles were inside the powerhead.
