Anyone know the trick to keeping anenomes alive ? We think they are dying because our marroon clownfish will not stop wallowing in them and they don't get the chance to "settle in".

Why do you think they are dying? How long have you had them? What are you feeding them? What kind of lighting do you have for your tank? Just a few questions before any answers will help you!!!:)

150 gal. tank w/ power compact lighting,we/the clownfish feed them silversides, squid, spiralina. They usually only last a short time, about a week. Our clownfish makes us laugh the way he looks as if he's in love. But then we notice the anenome looking rough after a couple of hours of straight wallowing by the clownfish.

How much PC lighting on the 150? You need over 600 watts to keep one alive anywhere in your tank.... They can survive with less than that on your whole tank but you have to concentrate alot of light on them directly. What are your water parameters as well?

96w eachX4 on the lighting. Tank measurements are 72" X 28" X 18".

Its not enough light for them.... Unless you can get them directly under 2 of those pc's. If they are halfway down in the tank or in a slightly shady spot they are doomed light wise.... Sorry....
EDIT: do they look stringy in the tentacles or loose their color at all?
EDIT2: sorry.... i keep remembering things. The wallowing by the fish is the covering of his body with the stickiness of the anemone. He's muting the sting of the anemone. Some clown can rough up anemones too much but usually there are other factors that lead to the downfall of an anemone, like lighting, water flow, and water conditions.

They stay at the bottom. One we have for now went under a "cave" at the bottom of the tank.

They look stringy when they die but they really don't lose their color maybe fade a little and my husband just said "and stink".

check my edits. I will bet its lack of lighting for them if they are on the bottom. While pcs are powerful its just not enough to reach one down there. Your only hope is to get one to foot at the top by the lights but its a very hard task to do.....

Guess they aren't our type of pet seeing as we don't have proper surroundings. Thanks for all of your help :D

Sure. If you want to get into corals clowns will host in a variety of them. But keeping a coral is quite involved and requires doseings every week..... YOu have to comit to the coral not the hosting.... If that makes sense.

Hi i have 2 anemones in my tank
My tank is a 3 week old tank and the light is 2*18W flo! But they are not tropical ones, I caught both of them. One of them is actinia equina and a small ugly, very red anemone. The other one is gorgeous, he just looks like a long tentacule anemone, very nice pink tips. They are living because i give them shrimp every other week or every week. When i first put him in my tank he was small, but he is getting bigger everyday! My tomato also looks like he liked it, a tropical clown hosting a untropical anemone!
But i dont recommend someone to keep tropical anemones w/o MHs

Ozadars - Your tank is only 3 weeks old? Did it cycle? Without getting into pulling them out of the ocean yourself, when you found them, how were they situated? Were they in shallow water? Exposed to the sun? If so, even a cold water anemone will need more than 2-18w bulbs for long term survivability.
Meaty foods help, but are not enough. I am speaking from experience with inadequate lights for anemone's.
myescape0- I don't think your clown is smothering your anemone's to death. That's what they do. Are the anemone's much smaller than the clown?
What are your water parameters? How much current is in the tank?
Anemone's will shrivel regularly. Don't read into it. They have one opening, and expel waste through the same opening they eat with. When they do, they expel all the water from them, and then suck in new water.
