Angels in Reef Tanks

Good Morning
I see a lot of people have angels in reef tanks that they should not be putting in their tank. How do make an angel that is not reef safe in to a reef safe fish.

Its a risk. Sometimes the hobbyist gets lucky and doesn't have a problem, more frequently the hobbyists just accepts that the angel is going to

on coral polyps and just lives with it.

well not all angels are like that. two angels of the same type could act totaly different. maybe the person found a calm one that doesnt pic at coral

There is a genus in the angelfish family that does not feed on corals called Genicanthus. Some examples are Watanabe, Swallow Tail, Lamarck's, etc.

I tried a juvenile queen a long time ago and within a day it was nipping. But as said before there are a lot of angels that are reef safe and pretty like the ones mentioned above. I was going to add a Red Sea Regal but they are notorious for eating zoos, clams, and sponges. I really like my zoos and clams so I don't have one.

I have a coral beauty. And he started to nip at corals so I put some sea weed in form ocean nutrition every other day. And he does not nip any more. I did take him a month though to start eating it. But he is a great looking fish though

A lot of dwarf angels are 50/50 my flame is a perfect citizen. It is the larger ones that are real risky.

Presently I have a flame angel. Model citizen. Never has touched my corals.
In the past I have kept coral beauties and potter's. Never had a problem either. Although like GregM said these dwarf angels are hit or miss.
IMO, if you keep them well fed they should leave your corals alone for the most part. Or maybe I have been extremely lucky, who knows.

I have a flame angel. We occasionally see it nipping at a few of our larger corals. We try to immediatley put food in to distract it. There is no guarantee with angels.

I had a Flame Angel that ate a large chunk of my brain while I was on vacation.

Makes me wonder if my roomate forgot to feed them cause I never saw him nip at anything before that....
