Angler Fish?

Anyone have any info, or experience with these guys? I was thinking of putting 1 in my 37 gallon tank, with maybe a dwarf lion.

I kept an angler for a while. I had a heck of time to get him to eat. So I finally just started damsels online (12 at a time) and adding them to his tank. He would eat them all in about a month. I finally took him to a LFS as he was just to expensive to feed. Do a little research on them there are alot of differnt ways to get them to eat. Mine was just very picky.

The one that I'm looking at the LFS is already eating. It's an interesting fish. Just try to get some info on how big they get, and how aggressive.

Thanks for the link. I really havn't been able to find much on them either. The LFS has a couple of them, and they seem to be doing fine in their tanks, and I still havn't decided if I want to give one a try.

Sargassumfish are among the most voracious of the anglers and will commonly eat fish larger than they are INCLUDING dwarf lions, unless you are lucky enough to obtain a really large dwarf lion and even then it could be risky as they grow to roughly the same size.
The Sargassumfish are also, IMO, the easiest of the anglers to get eating frozen feederfish (such as silversides), many eating them from tweezers or forceps the day you get them(always offer the feeders or pieces of feeders with the head and eyes, at least in the beginning, gently waving it a few inches in front of them).
DO NOT use feeder goldfish with these guys as it can have a negative to deadly effect on them in a very short time (mollies will work occassionally and actually live in the tank with them until eaten, eating algae until they become lunch)
Also Sagassumfish are among the most prone of the anglers to eat EACH OTHER, even including similarly sized fish.

But I havent been very lucky with them... I have had two in the past, and my first one ate a demsel and two week after he died of ick :( he cost me $99 The second one looked like a tiger in a brown color,he had a nice little lure that he used to catch the fish ate a demsel and a cleanershrimp and a week later he died of no reason :( he cost me $70 I dont know if he died of starvation for not eating for five days or what? I really dont know how many times a week the should eat or what... but they are my favorites, but u should do alot more research on them dont throw your money away like I did....

Could you explain to us what the angler looked like? Also could you tell us how much bigger the tusk was? Some Anglers are more prone to eating bigger fish than them such as the sargassum just as Conogre mentioned.
Its crazy how something so lazy could eat soemthing so quick, and always swimming?

well like I said they are my favorite. But after my first one died I did a lot of reading. Months later on a diffrent tank I decided to purchase my second one, brown with tiger stripes it had a little lure. Well he died too. I dont know why...I find them facinating and want another one... did u have anything special... any tricks to keeping them two years is a good record... I wish people could tell me more about them even though I did alot of reading but nothing like real experience like u had!!!!!;)

I had one for about a year, wild caught. He ate frozen foods great and was real healthy. I kept him on live foods too, to keep instincts up. Released him after 1 year. Great fish. I might have had unusually good luck, from what others are saying about theirs. It will fit anything in its mouth, even fish exactly equal to it somehow. Goodluck
