Another batch of clowns

Just like clockwork. Well, my clowns just got done showing a few of my customers the process of laying and fertilizing eggs. They as I do, find it truly a site to see. The amount of time it takes from beginning to end. Every 23 days a new batch is made. One of these days i will set up a hatchery for them. But not now....

naw, been there done that. I dont have time to fiddle with it right now. Although it would save me money if I just raised them instead of ordering clowns from my vendors every week. Of course, they wouldnt be ready for sale for at least 2 months.

about how many eggs/fry would you say you have every 23 days?

looks to be around 200 give or take.

I am thinking of trying my hand at this sometime so let me ask you some quick questions. I know I still have alot of research to do, but.
What survival % did you have from each batch when you did breed / raise them?
How long after they hatch were you keeping them before selling/trading them off?

about 70 percent were raised and kept until the 2nd month or until they were large enough to be on their own. The ones that didnt make it, were very tiny to begin with so, chances are they didnt survive because they were not strong enough to.

I have had 2 clowns in my 29g reef for 2 years never once saw eggs or little fishies whats the secrect?

Cool but Sad too.I hate to see all those babies just gone.It's so great to have a spawning pair.Your so lucky.It's sad to know their not going to make it into loving homes though

Not sure. Make them feel comfortable and give them a place to lay their eggs. I have another pair that I am working on to spawn, so we will see. I have four clowns. 2 percs and 2 false. The false are the ones that are spawning and I am working on getting the other set to follow. I dont do anything different. I just have always had the luck in mating pairs i guess.

My true percs. lay about every 15 days. They lay about 1000 to 1200 each time. If you look at the nest it doesn't look like there is that many but there is. The only bad thing is on percs is it takes about 10 months for all three bars to show up and they be the size to sell. Wife says no more aquariums or I'd have thousands to sell. My success rate is only about 15% to 20% though.

I waiting for my dealer to get me a mated pair of trues that Im hoping will mate soon. My girl is gonna kill me when she finds out that they might have babies.LOL

I have a pair of maroons and perculas that are supposed to be a mating pairs and time will tell . I also have a mating pair of Clarkiis but don`t have a separate tank for them yet and a few tank mates have been eating the eggs . Have a pair of black saddlebacks that I`m hoping they will start soon . Have another set of Perculas waiting for them to grow to start them also . My luck they all will start spawning at the same time .

I have 2 pair of spawning onyx, a pair of spawning skunks, a pair of spawning tomato's,. Reciently gave away a pair of spawning clarkki, and last year gave away a pair of spawning fire clowns.
My onyx have about 50-70% success rate.. My skunks are still young and only about a 10% success, but things will get better. I havent tried to raise the tomatoes, nor the clarki, The fireclowns produced a few babies befor I realized that they should not be allowed to reproduce because they are down right EVIL!
I didnt buy any of them as pairs (with the exception of the fire clowns). I bought them all as young juveniles and let them pair themselves
I truly believe that besides making them comfortable/feel at home, that a good diet plays a role in their spawning habits

Rod, how long did it take from the time you got them as juveniles for them to start spawning?

My youngest pair was about 16-18 months old when they started spawning. I have only tried to raise 2 of the ?10? batches that they have laid. Between those two batches, I probably have 200 clowns or so...
