I HAVE READ IN A COUPLE OF POSTS THAT LIGHTS SHOULD BE ON FOR 8-10 HOURS PER DAY. WHEN I DO THIS I GET AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF GREENISH/BLACK ALGAE ALL THE THE CC AND ON THE GLASS. DO I HAVE A LIGHT PROBLEM OR ANOTHER PROBLEM

how old is the tank also? if your just after or during your cycle the algae you are experiencing is normal. also it looks like one bulb is a vho(very high output) and the other one is a normal output light. do you know if you have a ballast to run vho bulbs or just normal bulbs?

Being a novice and not very smart a this yet.. The only new thing about the lighting system would be the bulbs at about a month old. The lfs said to get new bulbs when this was occuring before. the tank has been set up for almost a year. There is a lot of lr and the base is cc. There are only 4 fish in the tank alone with a clean up crew.

Make sure your nitrAte and Phosphate levels are in check. They will cause this also.

Kipass thanks for responding answers to most of your questions and by reading thru a lot of these scripts I already know I need to get a ro/di unit and a better protein skimmer. so the water answer is tap, the tank size is 55gal, feed fish every other day and enough that it is gone in a couple of minutes. the protein skimmer I have is attached to the filter that hangs on the back of the tank and is powered by andair pump

Make sure the lights are the correct wattage for your canopy. I don't know much about fish, but I do know about electronics. If the loads aren't matched correctly, then you may not only be wasting power, but the setup can be dangerous.
Also, sebae0 is correct about the vho. Make sure that you have the proper ballast.
Hope that helps a little.:)
