i know all of you are probably getting tired of my sump posts, but i want to make sure i've got it right! thinking about the Tidepool s.o.s. overflow from Marineland running into a 10 gallon sump, then water being pumped out by a Mag 7 pump. hows that sound? the overflow is rated at 600gph. and the Mag 7 is rated at 500gph. at 3ft. if that won't work,i'll take any suggestions!! also, what do i use to return the water back into the tank? a spray bar? any other suggestions? i want to keep it as simple as possible!!

Thats the exact setup I have with the exception of the sump itself. I went with the Tidepool I (wish I had DIY though instead). I have the SOS draining to a ball valve, then into the sump. The Mag 7 is hooked to a hard plumbed PVC return (1/2) to a ball valve, then anti siphon, then a PVC spray bar. So far works great.

I have something like that on my 125g. Two SOS overflows to a 20 gallon tall glass aquarium sump (with skimmer and DIY baffles). I have a Dolphin DP 900 submersed in the last section of the sump as a return pump. I plumbed with flex pvc and installed a swing check valve and ball valve (in that order) leaving the pump. All works well and quiet so far. The overflows only gurgle when I need to add water to my sump (from evaporation).
Actually, to get technical, I teed off one of the overflow lines to a rubbermaid refugium that sits on a stand in my tank cabinet. The fuge then gravity overflows into the sump through two DIY bulkheads.
I got a little fancy with my return lines. I have two because the tank is so long. They are in the back corners and each split into two outlets. I am hoping that this creates a good amount of flow pattern in the tank so that I am less reliant on powerheads. I wont know until I get the live rock in my tank and see how the water moves.
Good luck!
