Answers ASAP for 30-40 gallon set up

So I have a 55 gallon right now, but my mom wants to down grade to a 30-40 gallon tank to make more space. All the LR in my tank are covered with Coraline Algae and I was just wondering if I put the water from the tank in the smaller tank with the LR. Would I need to do the cycle for the new tank since everything is cured and what not? I am just trying to save some time to set up the new tank.

By moving the rock (and sand) it could stir up some ammonia in there that'll throw the system into a mini cycle. It's possible.

Water and rock will not .......or should not.......cause any ammonia spike if moved from one tank to another. It is the substrate you need to worry about here. My suggestion is if you want a substrate in the new tank purchase new dry aragonite, rinse it well, then add it to the tank. Take a cup of the old substrate from the top 1/8 inch layer of the old tank and add it to the new one.

Moms, who needs an extra foot or two next to an aquarium. Ask her how she would feel if someone took an extra 10 feet out of her bedroom.

If you have other filtration that cultures good bacteria; like a canister, wet/dry, HOB, etc., that will also help. The media in these filters usually harbors a great deal of aerobic bacteria.

Well as of now..I have CC. I hate it, I am going to go with the black sand. I guess live? Or is the white sand the only LIVE sand? Would the black sand cause a cycle to occur? I just bought a 46 gallon bow. I didn't go too much smaller for the little guys! Just want to venture out to do some black sand. Thanks for the replies!

Dont use live sand if you're transferring it over. If you use live sand, you're gonna want to cycle the tank before transferring. There are black live sand out there, but you dont want to use live sand in a transfer

Thanks for the information guys! I didn't go to much lower in tank size. I got a 46 gallon bow front. It only took about 2 hours to transfer the water from the old tank and change up my rock work. It has been a couple days now. I put my 3 fish I had in there and my inverts. And everything is swimming around fine, eating, etc. Thanks for the information once again. I will show pictures later.
