Cut a small frag off and see if it smells like death... thats a good way to know...
It could still be salvageable...
Its good to hear your water changes are going well.
Did you ever say what kind of Protein Skimmer you have?
I also recommend you get a refractometer, and a TDS meter since you said the water in AZ is so bad.

Same thing happened to mine a few weeks ago. One morning, it just looked horrible. After a few days (and a water change), looked the same. Cut off a small frag and didn't even have to have it close to my nose to realize is smelled like rotting fish! It was so bad, I gagged......and that is saying a lot!

Why wont it fit on the tank? Protein skimmers are absolute musts :scared:
This is another huge reason for your bad water quality.
What brand is the skimmer?

its an acyrlic tank and id have to cut a hole in the top and dont want to do when the fish are in. i dont know the brand. i bought from a buddy in calif. that took down his tank. i got the skimmer 70 lbs of live rock and the fluval canister for 150.00 but he said mabye jebo? it ran his 100 gal for a year.

yeah but when i got the hood with no holes then placed the tank 2 inches from the wall and put rock, sand and 100 gals of water. plus i have an extra 40 gal tank. and i love a good project.

once you get the skimmer on and working you will be getting tons of crap in the collection cup.. i mean TONS! since the tank has been up for 6 months with out a skimmer..
If you arent getting tons of stuff you need to get a new one... If its a Sea Clone Skimmer id trash it now for a Aqua Remora... I used to get nothing out of my Sea Clone.. i put a Aqua Remora on there and i now empty my collection cup every day if not twice a day...
they are the best!

the colt met his destiny. i loved him and need another. since i found out of the bad water ive changed 1 30% and 4 10%. amazing how much clearer the water and colors of fish and corals come out. skimmer is up and running. running about 3 gallons on the floor last night! i guess it takes a while to adjust right? thanks again

the collection cup overflowed. i guess the bubbles were ste too high. but the stuff it overflowed was something nasty and smelled horrible. my phosphates are 0 along with amonia nitrites and nitrates. ph though is still 7.8- 7.9. and kh is 9?? i dont even know what kh is. what else should i be checking for? and where can i get the test kits?
id defentally be interested in some kenya. but id want to wait a week or two to see what this water is going to do. please email me at solow11@msn.com, thanks

wow i cant believe it over flowed your collection cup that fast... usually protein skimmers take a few days to work correctly but i guess your water was so bad it worked immediatly... but thats good.. you need all that crap out of your water
