Not in small quantities unless you're a copepod.
If it were me I would remove any I find because if they get enough food they can reproduce by budding without going to the adult (Medusa) stage.

is an animal that superficially appears plant-like. Hydroids are however carnivorous animals that feed on minute crustaceans. Hydroids are related to jellyfish, sea anemones and corals. Some species live a solitary existence, others live in colonies.

I don't get how they would have got in the tank I have not added anything to it in a few months. So I am guessing they are fine in small numbers

These things can get in ANY tank. They are only problematic in something like fry or dwarf seahorse tanks where they can sting these small critters to death in the right numbers. The population of hydroid flourish in these environments with the BBS feedings. I don't worry about them in my tanks.
