Any one done this?

From what I hear, carbon is good to use temporarily to get out toxins and then take it out . That is what I was told. Also I heard that the biowheel are nitrate producers. For so many tanks, I would add a little more filtrarion to it, the wet/dry filter might help. If beaslbob were here, he would say to add more plant life to bring down the nitrates. Your nitrates are very high, and its a good thing that your fish are doing well. Unfortunatly I have considerably more experience with fresh water keeping than with salt. Maybe your protein skimmers isn't enough for your tanks. I would add another skimmer and see if that helps, maybe something other than the lee's, maybe try a seaclone or a prism. Do you think you feeding your fish too much, causing it to collect on the bottom. Hmmmm, I wish I knew more about sw to help you.
Your from Minnesota, what part, I used to live there, near lake minnetonka. Its west of the twin cities.

Oh yeah and another thing. If you want to raise those fish, you should talk to Bang Guy, he raises all sorts of fish. It sounds like he breeds, clowns, cardinals and others I'm sure. :)

I'm 360 miles north of the cities, about 80 miles strait north of Duluth. In the middle of nowhere.
I think I need to start revamping the gravel theory.
Maby if I replace the quarts/crushed coral, one tank at a time, over the corse of ?? / maby 1 every 3 months, as to not disrupt things too much?
Maby that would work. Then see if I can find some to that there play sand people are talking about to use instead.

Thanks....
I'll make a note of that.
So far I only have a mated pair on Clarkii and Tomatos.
And 3 Black cardinals that will fight to the death if I put them togeather......Thought cardinals were peacefull

Cardinals are peaceful, with fish other then themselves. They are fine until mature and unless they have a mate they will not tolerate others. I hope we have helped you out, if you have anymore questions, always ask, anyone will try to help.
Its sounds like your up near Ely or Virginia. I stayed in a cabin north of Ely with my family. Its so beautiful up there, I really miss it. I bet its getting reallly cold up there too.
Oh yeah about the beaslbob comment, don't always listen to what he says. Plant life will help your tank but its not the only thing you must do.
Make sure the sand your putting in your tank is arrogoniite sand, not silica sand. The sand is the white beach sand, and its arrongonite based. Good luck finding it, especially in MN, it might be at Home depot or menards.

Thanks cnlight,
Well you were very close on where I live.
I did live in Ely from 1991 to 1999. Moved closer to Virginia now.
Which resort did you stay at? I think I know most of them. Did you get a chance to go up the Echo Trail?
Trivia.... We held the record low temp until 1996.
62 degrees below zero (air temp, not wind chill)
Take care, Tagg_____

This whole thing sounds bogus to me. Either that or this guy is half-retarted. No, I dont think its him thats stupid. Its everyone that tried to help his "string of tanks" and "55 gallon water changes by adding a 55 to the system. My advice is that everyone that posted before me go drown themselves in Taggs tanks. Im sure he has enough space for everyone.

How long did this string of tanks end up being? Why didnt you just hook up a fuge to get rid of the nitrates?

If the tail end of THE STRING OF TANKS ends up in the Northeast somewhere, I might consider purchasing a 40-gal breeder tank.

I think you could consider the whole thing one big fuge. The pile of plants I ordered from Florida went from about 5 lbs to 50+ lbs in no time (can't remember the kind now). I had them growing in about every tank, Tangs shure chowed on them. The 33 gal long was the multiplying tank. It got about 4 some hrs of direct sunlight....... Oh, I did change most tanks to sand bottems.
Just doinging this in my head now... tank string
55, 55, 55, 45H, 40H, 25H, 29H, 15H, 55, 20, 20, ... I think :notsure:
Believe me, it was a pain leveling them all to the same height.
I still have a 6 gal pail of salt, I keep thinking of starting a tank up again but I'm afraid of what I might do...
500? 1000? 1500? Gal.

It blew my mind away when I got this reply email in an old email account just when I was thinking about setting up one small (40 gal) to mess around with again. I do miss the clowns... :happyfish

I will keep that in mind.
I'm now playing around with building solar panels for elec. and a solar water heater. I could run quite afew tanks/filter/heater with what I have going so far.

PBS (Nova) had a show on last night. "Saved by the Sun". I hope they can make multi-junction solar cells cheaper in the NEAR future. We could all use some cheaper, more efficient solar cells.
Also, I'd like to see if that company "Sun Edison" can put some solar on our company's roofs.

Hi Weberian
I think that since more and more people are wanting/trying solar, the price is going to stay the same or even go up more. I cant afford those high priced panels, so I get the individual damaged cells. Hooking them togeatger is a pain, but worth it. The ones I used on one panel...34 cells in series = 18 volts / 3.2 amp. (workimg power about 2 amps 12 volt DC)
With the very primative way I am doing this, I have dropped my monthly KWH usage by around half in the past 2 years.
What realy tickes me off is that they keep raising the rates on elec and service connection.... so I still pay about the same $$, but use half as much.
Kinda like the oil companys...If they can rip-off people and get away with it... They will
