I posted this in the fish discussion as well but figured maybe someone here might have more information. Ibought a white fan worm and I am not sure if he is ok. It keeps burying the fan end under any near by coral or burying itself completely in the sand. It hasnt opened the fan (That I know of) in almost 2 days but moves around a little so I know its not dead. Is this normal or is it committing suicide:confused:

Ok maybe this will help. From other research I have done I am assuming this fan worm as my lfs called it is the same thing as a feather duster. Does that sound right to anyone else.

I just bought this 4 pound arm looking live rock and it has about 20-30 of those fan worms in it. It really trips you out to walk by and see them disapear. I think they tease my mandarin cause he's always in the area of them.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately I dont think he made it. Maybe I didnt wait long enough before putting him in the tank. I bought him Sunday afternoon and I havent seen the fan part since Sunday night. Last night I moved him closer to a rock incase my scooter blenny (Who insists on scooting over him repeatedly) was scaring it too much and he hasnt move since. I know they are sessile but he was originally moving and settling himself a little I just kept moving him back out because he kept burying himself completely under the coral. They were cheap so maybe I will buy a couple more and try again.

Wait him out. Those things come already on uncured rock and live through curing. I would guess it may be OK.

when i put mine in the tank they took abot 6 days to come out you can get some micro-vert and squirt it in front of his tube and see if he comes out to eat also at the opposite end of the tube where the feathers come out you can look and see if you see the actual worm the come out pretty frequintly they are a maroon color and have lots of tiny legs the feather part of the tube is just for catching they food

thanks for the info. I did put some food in. cant remember exactly what its called but its a green liquid you dump right into the tank. My boyfriend teases me because every morning and everynight when I get home from work I go straight to the tank and sit there watching to see if he looks ok. Also like watching the scooter blenny he comes right up and stares back at me.
I will try to be patient and see what happens
