Any option other than MH out there?

Just so you know, you can actually get a nice metal halide setup for that kind of money. If you keep an eye on ---- maybe a local fish club (maybe they post on some other boards) you will find something cheap eventually. I just got a 250 watt retrofit with a 6 month old bulb for $50. I've bought two other 250 watt retro's each for about $100. So I was able to find 3 250 watt metal halides for less than the $300 you might spend on VHO's.

the heat is the issue though. I have a canopy and do not want to bother with fans, chillers etc..So I guess I will just not be able to do corals and anemones to avoid the MH's.

Does anyone know how good those pendant MH lights are and how many I would need for my tank??

HOpefully I can get away with that type of lighting in my 58 gallon...
