I am beta testing the new Windows Vista (scheduled for release in January 2007) and I was interested to see if anyone else was taking part in the beta testing. ***)

Not personaly but a buddy of mine has. I use XP Pro on my laptop at my job and it seems fine the way it is but Vista I'm not so sure about. It seems that they have stripped away everything that was so promissing about it the first day that it was announced (WinFS etc.) now it just seems like XP with a new interface. Sure, security has been beefed up but have you seen the retail price? $199 for the Home Basic edition, $239 Home Premium, and Vista Ultimate..... A whopping $399. Sure, corperations will probably upgrade only because their licensing agreements (it's cheaper) as well as enthusiasts but for the average person, I don't think so. $199 seems awfully unreasonable for a home edition and a basic one at that. I remember shelling out $200 for XP Pro at one time. I think Microsoft is going to fall on its face with this one.

Well I personally like the new interface and I agree with your perspective, to an extent. Yes, it's an XP interface, it was designed that way though so you wouldnt have compatibility issues with software like you would if they redesigned the entire system code up (i.e. Windows ME --> XP). Also, I don't think the price is that unreasonable considering most people will be upgrading from XP which nearly cuts the price in half (around $99 speculated for the Basic Home Edition).
I don't know but I've been using it for a while and alot of the features I hated in XP, I love in Vista. Plus, the developers have been suprisingly responsive at fixing bugs and adding things users, such as myself, find helpful.
If nothing else, the GUI is freeking sweet!
