I have a friend of mine who has a mole above her lip like cindy crawford, who wants to get it removed.. it is about 1/8". I wonder if she gets it removed, WHAT will go in its place, or does a mole just cover the surface.. AND I wonder how much scarring is involved.. I know these are questions for the plastic surgeon, BUT maybe somebody here will know as well. Maybe I should talk her out of it? Thanks All!

Depends on how good the doc is and how it is done.
But in most cases you will never know it was there before without having had seen it.

Depending on the type of mole, the procedure might be able to be performed by a dermatologist in the office. Mole excisions are pretty common and a skin doc can usually take care of it with minimal scarring, if any. She should first get a consult/biopsy to determine the nature of the mole. Some require more specialized attention (i.e. possible cancerous growths). Another consideration would be insurance, which may not pick up the tab for a plastics guy.

The boss has one she wants to get rid of . I think its sexy . its just a tiny thing on her chin but she hates it . I'm guessing its nothing at all with modern advances in medicine I imagine the docotr can hack it off and with in a few weeks you'll never know it was there.

I had 4 removed from my face and neck August of 2006. The key to recovery to avoid scars is to avoid the sun for 6 to 8 weeks. It was a pain for me being the middle of summer, but your friend is doing it the right time of year.
There are some other factors too, but what the doctor and nurses stressed was avoiding the sun. They didn't like to hear I was leaving that afternoon to hang out with friends on a ski boat all weekend. However you can't get the wounds wet either for 7 days, so needless to say I was on the boat babysitting the beer cooler with a big floppy hat covering my ugly mug. No scars though...

GROSS DETAILS, don't read if you are squeamish.
Well not really that gross, but my daughter had one about that size on her neck. The doctor just numbed the area and used a flexible razor blade to scrap/cut it off. I haven't really noticed any scaring.
However the doctor had one about the same size on her forehead. She said she has not had it removed because she does not want any possible scars on her face.
So go figure. My daughters also stuck up quite a bit and she used to get it caught on stuff, that is one of the reason she wanted it taken off.

Oh and dude, if this is your girlfriend you are talking about then take it from someone who has been married for 17 years. The correct answer is, "whatever you want to do Honey is fine with me!"

That was a weird reaction from the doctor. I had one mole that was basically one third on my lip and two thirds on the skin below the lip. I would nick the mole about once a month while shaving and it was a pain in the butt to stop the bleeding. No scar what so ever. The other two were on my cheeks and the fourth was on my neck.
Now my dermatologist didn't do the procedure in the office. Due to the lip mole he wanted me to go to a plastic surgeon for removal becasue he was afraid of scaring. I DON'T know if the dermatologist isn't as skilled or just doesn't do the same procedure as a plastic surgeon.
The plastic surgeon basically did the same thing as the poster's daughter, numbed the area and cut the mole out. I think the big difference was he did put a stitch or two in each wound to help prevent scaring.
Again, they beat me over the head with the no sun mantra.

Im a scrub tech and a first assist student (o.r. mumbo jumbo) and I have a personal friend thats a plasty
Heres the deal.
Most moles are not 'superficial'. They have 'roots' depending on the roots depth depends on how big the incision will be, and how big the scar will be. The will make a straight line, dig out the mole, and its roots, and suture a clean line with the stitches very close together. She will most likely have a very little scar. but she WILL have a scar.most likely she wont even be able to see it. (Sun causes scars to turn purple and become 'raised'.Obey the law of no sun or wear bullfrog after the procedure...) and the worst part of the procedure will be the local anesthetic (numbing injection- OUCH!) They can do it in the office no problem- actually, I cant see them doing it any other way really.
she can get her insurance to pay for it by having her doctor write that it was red and changed color in the last few months. Also maybe that it is painful in some way, or maybe she scratched it accidentally and its never been the same.. anything that makes the insurance think that it needs to be removed and sent to the lab. The procedure ends up basically being a biopsy. Depending on your insurance you may be able to get a plastic md to do it. Some ins. will only pay for a derm.
Its not that big of a deal. Tell your friend to go for a consultation, but they cant tell how deep the root is until they get in there.
I had a mole removed in my plasty friends office(he did it as a favor) and when he went in it had major roots and he had to make a larger incision. Luckily it was right along my hairline (which meant that my sunglasses and everything irritated it) and the scar was so tiny, and now its invisible anyway.
Happy Mole removal!
Jessica
