Anybody Who Knows Playa Del Carmen

Hello everyone,
short notice but I'm making a short vacation down to Playa Del Carmen and plan on snorkely just about 24/7. I've never been there but I've been doing a whole bunch of research on the snorkeling. I'm staying at Shangri-la Cerabi which is like the northern most beach front front resort of Playa. If anybody knows of some really good snorkeling places I would love to explore them and give a report back on how it is.
Any help appreciated,
Alex

Take a boat trip over to Cozumel, the best diving is over there, but I didn't make the trip. Another thing that was cool, but I didn't do, but about 20 minutes south of Carmen is some underground fresh water rivers that you can swim / dive in downstream until they empty into the ocean. That is pretty cool...they have a name for the underground rivers but I can't recall right now. Sonotas or siestas something maybe with an "S" but those names are probably incorrect.
There are also some fresh water lagoons you can dive in around the area.
My trip had 4 of us that went and I was the only diver. I just did a couple of shallow dives right off the coast, but these I mentioned above are worth the effort from the literature I read.
You will love Playa Del Carmen, the downtown is so nice and SAFE. It is probably 16 blocks long and 4 blocks deep with great restaurants and bars. The streets are mostly cobble stone and its really safe which I like about it being in Mexico.
Also take the time to drive to the ancient ruins which are about 45 minutes south. There is one I believe called Tulum that is on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, very beuatiful.
Have fun,
Chris

we had our honeymoon in playa, awesome. Take the boat over and snorkel in coza. The reefs around playa stink and half are dead from idiots smacking into it.
If you see a tour with the speed boat don’t do it. The boats are a hazard and like I said the reefs are dead. Nice fish but no reef.
Me and wife did a two tank dive in cozamel and had a blast. You don’t even need to go scuba diving, some of the nice reefs are like 10 feet. At the same time you want to smack the A-hole who is kicking the coral with their fins.

I was there 6 weeks ago on my honeymoon, it was beautiful!!! We went snorkeling and sea turtle spotting. Seeing the sea turtles eating sea grass was amazing! It was so fun seeing such a beautiful animal thats endangered. Have fun or your trip, we also went into a lagoon while there that had millions of damsels and some HUGE 2-3 foot long parrotfish!
Seeing coral reef out in the ocean is so amazing!!!

thanks for all of the replys it was a blast.
for all who said cozumel was better you're right. We went snorkling in Playa just a little north of the main beach and it was pretty nice. it's realy shallow so you can get really close. Not a lot of coral but a lot of cool little fish including some huge angles and even an OCTOPUS. he was awesome
but cozumel had everything. A LOT BETTER THAN PLAYA
