The questions that will be asked and will help to determine if you are going to have an issue from the star would be:
Size of tank
Age of tank
Specific water quality (esp. nitrates)
Other fish
Do you QT your fish
The problems tend to arise in smaller tanks, or tanks with other tangs or potentially aggressive fish. The aggression causes stress, and this makes the fish prone to infections or attack by things like Ick. Water quality is critical, and so is being willing to provide them with a proper diet including a lot of greens,

Thanks for the reply....I have a 46G Bowfront tank. My water param are good. I have a bubble coral, frogspawn, mushrooms, colt corals, zoos, fire clown, bar goby, lawnmower goby, snail, hermit crabs. I feed my fishes spectrum pellets.

The problem will really be size. Blue tangs get very ,very large and that size tank is not at all suitable for keeping one very long. If you had another tank that was significantly larger - at least a 75g - and you got a very small blue tang, it might be OK for a short while for the fish to get established. But really they need much larger tanks. Not being able to swim a lot may lead to stress, and to a sick tang. In addition, they would really need much more than pellet food. I would very strongly discourage keeping a blue tang in the tank.

thanks.. Had a really bad experience with a Powder blue last year. My LFS got the best of me. Thats Y I am a bit more cautious now. What about orange spotted goby? They are sand sifter I believe. Are they hard to maintain?

The issue to think about with the sand sifters is if it will throw up sand onto your corals, which is an irritation. So that is something to research with people who have kept them.
I really commend you for doing research on these fish, and taking the "bad news" on the blue tang quite well

Thank You...Very mush appreciate your advise. Its often times very difficult t fight impulse. I saw a small blue tang for $20 earlier and wanted to buy it. Very hard to walk out w/o buying the tang. But wanted to make sure I do my research first b4 buying another fish. Thanks

Actually it's powder blue tangs that are ick magnets. Blue tangs, at least in my experience are no worse than any other tang for getting ick. You want to make sure and acclimate them properly to reduce their stree and everything will be fine.

newbie,
i totally agree with ophiura any tang in a small aviroment its a time bomb!
my original tank was a 55 g and i did not even consider stocking any tangs in it.
some will be going into my new tank but, thats because its 280g.
the risk in small tanks is that apart from your tangs not surviving it will also affect the other fish within. (sorry if this is not what u were hoping to hear) (rick)
 :happyfish

While acclimation is important, there are many other factors that are equally if not moreso...saying "everything will be fine" is extremely misleading, IME. It takes a lot more than that.
