I had one many moons ago and all i can tell you is if you get them small you shouldn't have much trouble with other fish. But they can get very large and need a large tank and have BIG appetites.

yea if small no worries but once they get big even though they may look like they have small mouths these things will just eat anything in the tank basically..my friends panther ate his yellow tangs....

I like the looks of them when small, but don't think that larger specimens are that good looking. If interested in groupers I would look at a miniatis, or peacock. As with any grouper they will eat anything they can catch, thats small enough for them to swallow. Look in the aggressice forum, there are some pics of a guy's grouper eating his trigger. Most groupers need a minimum of 180, and grow rather fast.

I just recently got a small panther as well. I know they well eat anything they can fit in there mouths when they get older but right now I'm hoping if I rasie it with the smaller fish I would like to keep, like my goby, a royal gramma, and six peacefull yellowtail blue damsels that when it is large enough to eat them it won't see them as food as long as I feed it well and never anything live. Anyone with more exprience with this fish have any ideas wither this will work or not?

K-Dawg,
I don't have any personal experience, but have heard numerous times about groupers in general that as they get older, they will start to pick off their tankmates. I doubt it will work, but you never know.

I had a panther a few years ago...gezzzz...did he get huge! I don't think the panther will abide by "rules of friendship". If he's hungry he will eat...whatever he can. By the way I ended up selling him due to his size....
