I have read that it is possible to keep fish without corals but not the other way around. I don't know the reason for this. Anyone who does?

Fish come and go in my 180. Sometimes I have a few then not any.
Just had to remove my large hippo that was the only fish (pus manadrin) in my 180 for a while. He stared nipping corals.
I have a very small manadrin dragonette now and thats all.
Seems I always end having to trap a fish because of fighting or coral nipping.
Decided I am an invert keeper and will reamin fishless.....unless I can find a black tang.

We started out with several fish in our reef, then when we bought our 200 we moved all but our Clarkie Clowns(hoping to have them breed)out of the reef. Now we have the clowns, a kole tang,a Coral Beauty and a Mandrine in there. When we but the kole and coral beauty into the 200, they we're picked on so we moved them to the reef. They make a nice addition though. Lisa

I don't know about keeping no fish. I've also heard you must have fish in a reef tank, as many corals in some way require there presents, but it wasn't explained to my satisfaction as to why. If its true I would love to hear the reason.
I only keep a few fish in mine.

Unfortunatly due to some poor advice when I put the four fish I did have in a hospitol tank to treat them for Ick it was too late and they all died.I had 2 damsels,1 Royal Gramma, and 1 Coral Beauty Angelfish. Now that I have my display tank with the water quality back up to par all I have left in my tank is 3 Turbo snails,4 small hermit crabs,1 Mushroom polyp and a couple of other small coft corals that I'm not quite sure of what they are yet but they are all doing fine and growing without the presence of fish.I plan on putting more fish in the future but I plan on doing more research on what I'm going to put in first.Good luck to you and hopefully for me as well.

In my 30gal, all I have is a Pygmy angel(1 1/2"), a 6 line Wrasse (3/4") and a Yellow Watchman (1"). I only feed them once a month or so and change the water every few months. the only real filtration that I have is my protein skimmer and I have a tiny bit of floss in a canister filter that is used primarily as a powerhead. Life on the reef has never been better for me or my prized fish and corals.
Large amounts of fish = maintence hell
Few fish = ecosystem

NaCl-H2O: My guess would be that fish are not needed. A clean up crew and health sandbed would be though. If you did not have fish you would have to feed the tank more or so I would think. The benifit of the fish is that more nutrients are avaliable for the corals to consume.
My thoughts. Anybody else?

All I have in my reef is a small coral beauty and a 5" marine betta. If your looking for just a single "large" fish for a reef and have room for him to hide and lounge around in I reccomend a Marine Betta. Very Cool fish!!!!

The saying was...
"Fish can live without corals, but corals can't live without fish."
The meaning was that corals require some of the metabolic wastes of the fish. BUT, I do believe that shrimp, crabs and snails would do the same thing.
