I just bought a property that doesn't have city water and sewer hook-up so i have a septic system. This will be my first time using septic over city water/sewer and i know you have to watch the water you use so you dont overflow your septic systems.
does anyone have a septic system w/ a larger tank (100+)? My current plans w/ the building involve putting in a 6 foot tank into the wall (exact diameters are not known yet in terms of height or depth) and i want to make sure this wont cause problems when i do water changes or make RO/DI water.

make RO water wont effect the septic system. The salt is another story though because of the salt in large quanities can start to kill off the bacteria in the system.
When I was on a septic system I used a tub out in the sun so it would evaporate and then threw out the left over salt residue when it was done evaporating. in the winter I used a heater on high to evaporate the water out in a spare room it help to moisturize the air in the house.
Sounds extreme but I didnt have to worry about the salt distroying the system.

ugh!!! i can just keep praying the city will come in and put in sewer/water! I bought land in a small town thats surrounded by a bigger city. If i go like 1/2 mile to the east they have city water/sewer.
Thats a good idea though, my plan is to use the storage area behind the tank to store everything. I can just get a large container and just let it sit and evaporate.
and for the RO water i was more worried about the amount of "Waste water" it produces. To make 30 gallons of good water, you waste probably 100-200 gallons of water.

with just water going through the system 90% of it wil go right out through your leach feild and not really effect the system.
I was in an area where the water was horrible so I didnt even get a good ratio on RO it was so bad. my system was installed wrong so it was real close to the top of the ground because of a cletcha feild in west Texas that was like concrete nothing penetrated it not even water and never had a problem with the waste water.

I have a septic system...I just dump the water in the woods behind my house ... run a long hose to siphon when doing water changes...works like a charm

Very interesting informative, we are planning to purchase the land out of City of Austin, 1 acres land with manfuacturing, plan to tear it down and build a house on land, There only connect by septic. Water is from municpal not well.
I read all of your comments on forums, I added your suggestion on my list for planning.
One- get large storage tank for waste RO probaly 200 gallons to feeds for flowers or car washes or whatever..
two- small tub for drain the old saltwater from tank for evaoporte where the sun direct.
should get water filter system to connect with RO/DI will make any difference?

Most cities now require Aerobic spetic systems anyway (what I have). RO/DI water will just equate to your sprinklers going off more.
I dump my old salt water on the weeds at my mail box. Have yet to see them start dying from it....

I`ve been on septic system my entire life and my biggest tank is a 135 and 7 others from 125 and down . My RO waste water and water from tanks [on water change days] go right into the drain into the septic tank . Never had any problems in the 17 years I`ve had saltwater tanks .

Dawman, really, interesting.. Septic is my first time if I purchase the house. Of Course little scary....
1journeyman, I noticed two places that are on sale that have aerobic systems, started to get more to have aerboic system after 2006, that two places we are looking to check it out..

i don't think you want to put salt water into a septic system, especially ifthe holding tank is cement. i'm not sure if the different bacteria will affect each other, but salt and cement can't be good. i just dump the saltwater out on the forest in the back.
as for the waste water from the RO unit, do you have a basement with a sump? i just drip the water into the hole in my basement and it just gets recycled into the well.

don't mean to hijack the threads.. curious about wells, will be alright with RO/DI? or will wear it out premature? I never thought of wells

good ideas... i guess when the time comes i will need a nice pump and a long hose to take out the water to the woods in the back!
and i never thought about draining the RO water into the sump... good idea
