Anyone here have the AquaFuge Hang-on tank Refugium?

I was think about getting the biggest version of this specific refugium. I was sure if anyone here has one. If so how would you rate it from 1 to 10 and why? Also I wasn't sure how many gallons the thing holds and how many lb. of sand it would take to make a 3 or 4 inch sandbed. Hope someone can answer my questions. Thanks.

CPR's AquaFuge hang-on refugiums come in three different sizes to meet the needs of marine aquarists.
Each model comes with its own powerhead and features a unique baffle system that prevents the substrate and organisms from being disturbed yet also allows enough water to flow through the eliminate any stagnant areas.
The AquaFuge provides ideal growth conditions for food items, such as copepods and ampipods, to feed invertebrates and fish in the main tank.
It provides a controlled growing area for macroalgae, which can be used to reduce "nuisance" algae in the main tank and provided a "nursery" area for a variety of organisms.
Lighting options are available.

Medium AquaFuge

Just a few pounds of sand should give you a 3-4 inch bed.

Thanks a million! I have been racking my brain for a week trying to figure out how much lr and ls I would need to buy. Thanks a lot!
P.S.
What do you mean by a "few" pounds? Can you give me a number range as in # to # pounds of ls?
Oh and what light would you recommend that would be really good for it to grow plants AND coralline algae? I would need the light name and model name and the dimensions for the light that would fit my tank. And I don't want to spend much more than $75 on a refugium light. Thanks again!

a friend of mine has the CPR small version. seems to work fine and has it on a 150G.
it's really quiet too. i was wondering the same thing about the light, i want one for my 75G unless i build a sump first.

Hmm I am not sure how many pounds it will take still to get around a 4 inch sand bed. The usual method is length of tank times width time the number of inches deep you want you sand bed. So 25 x 4.5 x 3 = 16.9 (I used 3 instead of 4 because I figured this wouldn't be very accurate). So that means 16.9 pounds of sand should give that 25 L x 4.5 W space a sand bed depth of around 3. 16.9 punds seems to be way too much. Someone help me plz.

16.9 pounds will probably fill that aquafuge half full!
Look how much sand a 20 pound bag contains and picture almost all of that in the fuge, wow!
I can't remember how to calculate that but i do know this Alaskan Amber is mmm good! :joy:
I would say go with a 10 pound bag and pour it in until you reach your 3 inch goal.
Maybe this Amber is too good and I now realize that the fuge is over 2 feet long and 16.9 pounds doesn't sound bad at all.
Sorry, I'm of no help at the moment.:nope:

I just got mine in the mail yesterday. It's an 18" version, and the complete package was $128 shipped. Got the hang on, powerhead, light, plumbing, and everything.

This is a great post, because I was just contemplating all the same questions. I was also wondering what would be the most beneficial setup to maximize the function of this sucker.
Live sand, MUDD??, live rock or some combination for the bed/base?
What type of plants or animals would be best?
Any opinions would be most appreciated.

PS: Thanks to Hermitcrab for letting me thread crash.
:D

I just bought a 18 inch also and I had to assemble it. Did you all have to assemble yours? I was kinda fun it came with everything. Hey my question is, Im planning on putting this on my 29 gallon. Will this size of an aquarium hold the weight of the 18 inch by 4 inch sump? My sump was 25 bucks or close to that on that auction, but it didnt come with the power head or just an FYI.

No, mine came assembled. I saw the kits though, so know the ones you're talking about. I didn't trust myself having one that didn't leak when I was done.
Water's 8 pounds a gallon I believe. Then you'll have to factor in whatever you have in it (sand, live rock and such). I don't see why it would be a problem. Mine's going on a 50.
