ruger in my opinion ils like the hyundi of guns. cheap hold up for a while and look decent, but lack in some major points the amature dosnt really see. personally.. 1911's are as classy reliable and well balanced as it gets.. my personal guns of choice & use. thanks to out standing reliability, comfort, and accuracy are my glock 36 .45 sub compact and my Springfield armory XD .40 i know some one is going to say springfield? and i was never a fan till i fired a few through my buddys and i'm a beliver.. about 10,000 rounds through the XD and it jammed maybe once or twice and thats it... glock's been fired more and about the same on jamming maybe three times. if moneys not a real option Kimber's are nice and as far as S&W dont know a soul that ever complained about one, just not my cup of tea but a fine gun and very well made. i'd sleep good at night knowing i had one if that helps... but i would stay away from a ruger especially the beginer bargin P95

Doh! I meant Baretta's p92. Sorry got em mixed up. They use the P92 in the national g. around here. But they are swaping them out for an updated version of the 1911. Baretta, ruger whatever. Taurus has bought the 1911 design, and has released a newer version of it. Its pretty nice!

so here you go, rugur been around for a long time, but never seemed to get the pistal just right, if you want to get a fire arm for target practice, the rugur is the wrong direction, if you want to get a good target gun, and not spend a ton of money like on a sig, then i would go with the s&w m&p, you can get it in the .40, .357 or 9mm, its an all around good gun, for everything, target practice, self defence, the thing about guns is, it doesnt matter how big your caliber is, what matters is can you hit what your aiming at.

Puff Puff- I've been debating about the XD myself. Are they really as comfortable as they claim? My personal favorite is the old school Colt 1911. My father has 2 WWII's and they're fantastic. I don't think you can hurt those things.

i agree 1911 is one of my favorites but the XD is by far quick, lite, acurate and comfortable.. im 5 foot 5 inches and 135lbs belive me it has to be comfortable and lite or i wont use it.. the glock is a tank compared and its a sub compact.. i can hoestly say for the whole 449.00 with warrenty and service plan it was a screamin deal!!!!!!!!!! i may buy another so i can have a pair.. and did you ever see the movie badboys 2? with will smith and that martin guy? in the end of the movie will smith actually is holding an xd 40 can even see the name on the gun when watching on the big screen.. i was like HEY THATS MY GUN! haha it was funny any way, ya its a great gun man.

I have the HK45 and the SW40. I love them both, I put Hoage (not sure of the spelling) grips on mine and they feel perfect, shoot perfect, and are very acurate. Too heavy for a carry gun though, especially with a full clip. My husband doesn't like it, but I use my colt 380 mustang as a carry gun. He thinks I should use a bigger round, but I am little and the HK and SW are too bulky. I put a little extra $ into the ammo and get a good self defense round.Any way, that's my 2 cents worth.

I own one and love it. To me it's the perfect combination of weight, fire power, and clip size.

I bought a new .380 Colt Govt. model (paid $300) about 20 years ago and still have yet to shoot it. Only public firing range on the island is about 50 miles away. Hawaii isn't very gun friendly, Govt. does everything possible to discourage gun ownership. I suppose I bought it just to thumb my nose at the establishment.

I've got a couple boxes of rounds I bought at the same time, wonder if they are still good?

I have to agree with much of this advice Kimbers are excellent. Completely forgot about that brand. You cannot go wrong with a 1911 either, the 1911 pistol has tons of aftermarket parts availible and the 45 ACP is a good stopping round. You can easily customize a 1911 into an accurate competetive gun that will stop the largest bad guys. Sig is still my favorite though.

Yep, got a Springfield Armory XD .40. I love the saftey features it comes with and the multitude of accessories for a decent price. I put it on lay-a-way so it's not mine yet but I will probably go ahead and pay it off tomorrow since I am impatient. I put it on lay-a-way because I didn't want the wife to know how much it costs but now I don't care

Great choice. As for the wife not knowing the cost, that is why I am a firm believer that every man needs a secret slush fund. They come in handy in circumstances like these!!

a local police dept. where i work recently switched to the xd pistol and is having many problems with them. not sure how the problems would impact non police or military use so i would think for your purpose the weapon will be just fine. looks and feels very nice, especially if you have smaller hands. where i work we use sig 226 40 cal. (was used by seal teams) , 239 off duty 9mm or 40 your choice. they are on the higher price scale than most weapons, but worth every penny.

from what ive been told, they had a problem with several weaons jamming on the range during qualifications. i havent spoken to any of the officers regarding the problem. i recently bought a glock and was looking at the xd pistiol. i was talked out of it by the shop owner, and he cited the pd's problems. i dont know what type of ammo they use and if that would add to the problem. ill try and findout soon, and get back to everyone-
