i was going to cc in my new 55gal tank but after reading alot of post im starting to lean towards a 4inch sand bed. i was wondering if i just used "dead"rock with the live sand bed wouldnt the rock eventually become liveand be much cheaper than paying 5$/lb for live rock.also ive heard of dsb becoming a time bomb if ever stirred up has anyone ever had this happen to them? thanks for the help

i've bought the dead rock or "reef rock" it's cheaper to buy & i've been told that if you add some live rock to it / it eventually becomes live rock as well i don't have any live rock so i don't know / but my "reefrock"
is an awsome neon green & red & the fish love it hth good luck

I've bought it for about 1.50 a lb. It takes about a year for it to become live rock in your tank given good conditions.

BB - we went with dead rock as a foundation, surrounded it with Aragonite dead sand and then live sand and then placed the live rock on top of the base rock. No sense paying the big bucks for rock that is under the sand.
I would not scrimp on the live rock. It is awesome and really speeds things up.
Hope this helps.
