Anyone live near a North Carlina beach?

I will be doing some training with the Army Reserve, and we will be staying in beach condos (the army these days eh?), I live in Indiana so its quite a ways away. Buy my question is, is it illegal to take sand from a beach? I am starting up a 125 (not going to take 200lbs or anything lol) soon so I need some sand. My problem would be getting it back to Indiana if it is legal.

I could not find any law against it, but here is the number you would need to call to get an answer.

I couldn't find anything against it either, thanks for the number, I will give them a call tomorrow to find out, I may look stupid, but, if its gonna save me some money, heck, why not!?

just be carful of toxins that wash up in shore. things like oil and gas from boats. you would be better off buying dry agragate sand.

another question, why are you putting 200 lbs of sand in your tank. how long and wide is your tank.
Using the sand calculator on a tank 60 inch long and 18 inch wide, with a 2 inch sand bed its only 88 lbs of sand.

He isn't taking 200 lbs. Reread the post.
Even if you can, I wouldn't do it...to many toxins washing up off shore, people adding their own toxic waste in various forms.. In your small aquarium it could prevent you from sustaining anything in the tank. Now, if you werte to go out into the ocean a ways and scuba dive down, that might be ok...depends on how far out you get.

When I used the calculator, it said 200lb. I added 40lb to my 55 and barely got 2 inches in some spots, so I know 80lb wouldn't do it. No need to get in an argument over sand really, I appreciate all the input. I want a deep sand bed so I will probably use more than what the calculator is giving me anyways. I did call, and I was told it IS illegal if its in a State Park, elsewhere, eat your heart out.

+1 on going further out in the ocean and not getting it off the beach. Beach sand is full of crap that is washed up in the foam.
Which NC beach are you going to?

DarthTang,
Since I can't send you a PM while I'm on my phone, I'll have to do it here. You need to tone it down with your sarcastic, and just down right rude comments. They're uncalled for and many members are really getting irritated. There were much nicer ways to point out that someone misread something.
Please, contribute peacefully, or not at all.
To the original poster,
If you're trying to save some money, I'd suggest dry sand and then buy a cup or two of live sand from your LFS or a local reefer to help seed the sand bed. It's much safer than taking sand from the beach. IMO, unless you go miles offshore, you're going to get contaminated sand.

I was gonna use crushed coral (heard it was a hassle so changed my mind), so going with the aragonite (argonite maybe, spelling is off today
), but figured I could save a few bucks if I could ship about 60lbs of sand (5 gallon bucket or so) home, but I doubt I will. Might use a cup of sand from my established tank though. Choices choices choices! Last time I was at Oak Island, I am sure it has changed though.

This isn't about anyone having more power than you. I've asked you to stop being rude and sarcastic, and yes, other members have a right to know that we are. Enough with the sarcasm. If you have nothing of value to contribute, just don't, and this goes for everyone.
I'm locking this thread. Sorry to the original poster.
