Barnes and Noble had the Canon Rebel for $300 after Christmas. Not sure if it is still going at that price.

Look at something like the Sony Alphas. Nice camera and they can use any Minolta lens made in the last 25 years or so which means you can score great deals on lenses in pawn shops or craigslist.
