Can anyone tell me of their experiences with this beautiful creatures? I am considering a 'school' of three (3) Purple Firefish. My tank's status is below...I will be considering a Flame Angle, a PSYCHEDELIC MANDARIN , a Regal 'Blue Hippo' Tang & maybe, just maybe, find a mate for the PSYCHEDELIC MANDARIN . I need all the input I can get on Firefish, especially Purple Firefish, since I've never seen them at any of my LFS. Thanks Ya'll

I used to have a purple firefish, very pretty and swam around in upper part of tank, then one day swam a little too high and went carpet surfing. Made it out through a pretty small opening too! do a search on this site, fish forum and you should get a lot of info on them. HTH

firefish, the reccomended number is
1 alone
2 if paired well
or 5 or more, they wil fight, but a shoal will spread out the possible aggression problems that often occur amoungst themselves

I've had my purple firefish for about a month now. It's tankmates include a six-line wrasse and a bi-color pseudochromis. The firefish is probably my favorite of the three due to it's fearless nature. It is always out in the front of the tank and when i approach it always stares right back at me. I find it can be a little bit of a bully at times though to the six-line. Very beautiful fish and would definately recommend it. Good luck whatever you decide.

I have three regular firefish(it's late, and I can't remember the proper name right now) in my 75 reef with a royal dottyback, false perc, purple tang, and a mandarin. Great addition! Very disease resistant, and out in the open most of the time. They even sleep in the same hole in the LR.
Everything I have read says this shouldn't work(three in a 75 gal.). Apparently, I got lucky, and my firefish didn't read those books :p Yet another reason to research animals before buying.
I have seen one of them try to launch itself straight up, luckily I keep glass tops. Keep the tank covered with something.

i'm also curious on what everyone will say about this... i had 2 orange firefishes in my 29 reef and they got along fine for 3 months and all of a sudden, one of them decided to be mean and killed the other.... survival of the fittest, i guess...
i wonder if 3 is better?

I have a firefish with a clown and flame angel. All three fish leave each other alone. What everybody else said is true...they stay in the open most of the time and sleep under the live rock at night. A very peaceful fish.

Don't put them in a tank with agressive feeders or they will starve to death. Oh yeah, and they love brine shrimp.

Make sure the tank is completely covered, they're notorious jumpers...they love plankton...and I've yet to have a royal gramma that didn't want my firefish dead. Beyond the gramma and the leaping, I haven't had a problem with them.
