Mine deserve the bad reputation award.I bought a mated pair of japanese pistols, and put them in my 10 gallon reef tank with a neon and yellow watchman goby , both gobies are MIA (beleve they were eaten) only fish left is a pajama cardinal!
I have read and been told that the Japanese Pistols are the most aggressive and should not be paired with gobies because they'll eat them.
I have sort of abandoned this thread and kept my other going. so far so good. There are actually two pistols in the tank. so here's the stock list with no losses so far:
2 pistol shrimp
1 yasha goby
1 occellaris clownfish - which will be moved once he grow
1 emerald crab
1 acro crab - came as a hitchhiker
1 pom pom crab
5 trochus snails
2 nassarius snails
4 cerith snails
5 mexican reef hermit crabs
2 ghost shrimp - feeder shrimp just keeping them til I need to feed my duncans in the 155 again
1 fire shrimp

not a good picture, but I have been seeing my pistol daily ever since I got the evil bicolor out of the tank. the watchman strays a lot farther from the burrow as well.

I have a quick question while we're on the subject. lol I have a five gallon that was specificaly set up for a Yasha goby and a Randalli pistol, but fell in love with a pom pom crab at the LFS and he's currently housed in their to-be tank. Will the pistol hurt him?

If you look above in my stock list, I have two Randalli pistol shrimp and a pom pom crab with no issues. Try to get a pistol shrimp that is smaller than the crab. Honestly, from what I have seen, the pistol shrimp, especially the Randalli's get a bad reputation from people that don't know anything about them. They are extremely peaceful. They leave all my inverts and fish alone. I even have ghost feeder shrimp that the pistols ignore and I specifically put them in there to try to get the pistols to eat them. From what I've seen, they're not only peaceful, but LAZY. They will wait for fish food to float by them and they grab it just like any other cleaner shrimp would. I do hear them snap at night, but nothing is even near them when they do it.
