this is prob. stupid but i know ive heard before with an average tank some people just using live rock and a skimmer for filtration is this possible on smaller nano's such as a 10g with 20lbs of rock?

very risky, you will have all kinds of problems. Nitrate, ammonia, and a messy tank, just to name a few.
ESPECIALLY with a small tank.

?!?!?
I have a 29 biocube and all I run is a biocube skimmer (Whitch isent that great) and LR. and I have a large bioload( maroon clown, blennie, and 2 cardinals). and I do weekly water changes and dont dose a thing. people get caught up in the stats and so on and have never even tryed it. I have seen reefs run on nothing but LR LS and monthly water changes

After seeing the amount of stuff I rinse out of my sponge each week, not to mention the changes adding chaeto has made, I think you're playing Russian roulette with your tank that way.
It may work for several months, but sooner or later, things are going to build up and something will go horribly awry.

I run no filter when I go on vacation so that the person watching my tank only has to top off. It's perfectly fine to run no filter if you keep up with regular maintenence and water changes. It's much easier in with a system with a sump. Most of my detritus collects in my sump and I vaccum it out weekly. I would suggest a skimmer at the very least if you attempt to go without a filter.

I am sure that is the key "noone has tried it much. Many folks get caught up in the hype and high tech (I'm an advocate of low tech cost effective alternatives being a technology consultant ... go figure) craze which is sometimes driven by marketing and perceived utility but little real data. Remember the under gravel filter craze that has quelled in the past few years due to rethinking out of the box? That is why I am experimenting with a low tech, low cost, high impact 15G high.
