Just wondering if anyone has been successful in keeping a tang in a tank 40 gallons or less. I dont want this to turn into a tang police ransacked thread I just want to see how they do it if it has been achieved for a long term. Let me know.

the smallest tank i housed a tang in was a 55gal for about 3yrs...i think a 40gal would work only for about 6mos and only if the tang was small.
i wouldn;t reccommend it though

I kept a tiny blue hippo in my 20 gallon tall. This fish was about the size of a dime, he was in there for about 6 months so I could keep an eye on it, now he is in my 240

I bought my second hand 20 gal from my friend. When I got the tank it had a small hippo tang in it and it was the same one his wife got him last december for christmas. Unfortunatley, from the move and my lack of competence the tank cycled killing him and my two percs about 2 months ago. I'm almost positive that if I had the experiece I've gained from this site back then he would still be scootin' around. Scarlet cleaner lived though.

i wouldnt suggest it. I have a couple in a 200 gallon and they swim around allot. I couldnt imagine stuffing them in such a small tank.

I think the length is more important then the gallons am I right? I have a Hippo in my 55 now, and she is happy, but my tank is the recommended 4 foot minimum. She swims around alot, so I think and less length of tank and she would be cramped.

i agree smoothounds....when i moved my hippo tang from my 55gal to my 125gal i witnessed such a change in behavior. he didn't "race" back and forth anymore and didn't hide anymore either. I won't keep a tang in anything less than 6feet again.

I had a Hippo in a 55 for about 8 years when I first started out. It was really sad and I would never do that again.
I do not consider it a success. I believe that fish would still be with me today if I had housed it properly in a 6 or 8 foot tank.

I've got to admit, I have always been vehemenetly against the tang police and the gotta have 100g to be in the club mentality, but a tang in a 40g I wouldn't do it...
I have a YT in my 65 (or 60g I dont know what size it is) and it is awesome. but it does swim around a lot and its the undisputed master of the tank. It never messes with the maroon clown though. I would say a 4ft tank is a must for the YT (IMO---you can put one in a 5g if you so choose). a 55g would be the minimum. (I can't believe that I am saying that!!!!) its just that after seeing how well the YT does in my 4ft 65g I couldn't see it in a shorter tank....
length of the tank is the most important, width and height are forgiving IMO...
good luck

i saw a friends 120 gallon (4 ft) tank the other day that has a hippo tang
the fish stays at one end all the time - if anything he only swims the 2 foot width (fish is about 4-5 inches long)
he says he feeds at the other end just to get it to swim around to the other side
