I just bought a de-ionizer for tap water. It appears to be about the best thing I've seen for SW. Is it too good to believe????am I missing something?
If I filtered my aquarium water thru it would it remove anything that is vital???? Like salt?

i dont have a D/I filter but i want to get one this weekend. I asked a few days ago here what the difference between a D/I and an R/O filter was and Reefnut told me that the D/I is a better filter as far as removing elements, but not pathogens. The problem is you have to replace the filter a lot more, so they are often used together. An R/O filter to take out most of the contaminants, and then a D/I to take out the rest. But depending on your water, the filter will only last between 25-125 gallons. 125 probably being with pre-filtered water.... not sure though. dont have one yet so i cant realy say.
Not sure about the second part.... i was actualy wondering the same thing, so ill have to check back here to find the awnser. Id love to remove any copper from a single treatment i did about 2 months ago....(the guy at ***** told me he recomends it and that he uses it in his tank...siiiiigh) So some is still seeping out of my live rock and crushed coral (a different guy who doesnt even have a tank but said he was trained told me there is no advantage with sand over crushed coral....double siiiigh). So i woudl like to get that removed

I bought one a month back and have cycled my tank with the DO water and I would say that I have less red and brown algea. All of my levels are better as well. Worth the money!!!
The cartidges can go quick, I believe it depends on how bad your water is where you live. My water where I live is pretty clean so the cartidges last for me.

thanks, hopefully someone will tell us if we can run it with a powerhead and not lose the goodies in water.

If you really want to provide awesome water, look into an ecoquest water purification system. It uses UV light, ozone, .05 miron solid carbon filter. Basically it removes any contaminants you can find in water, removes chlorine, bacteria and virus, copper and lead etc...countertop unit or they do have a whole house system.
Cost of unit is a bit expensive, at around $400 for countertop, and around 3k for whole house, but so worth it, especially if you are on a well like me. I wouldn't drink any water from any city or well without this level of filtration let alone put it in my tank.

A DI for $70.   Online for about $25 is the going rate. Cartidges for $14.
I used 1 for a long time. If you go thru them fast, try a pre-filter.

I don't understand. This goes on a tap.
