anyone with a diatom filter

do the diatom filters do a good job of keeping your water crystal clear like they claim? If so, how much and how often would you run one? I"m curious to see if there"s good luck or bad associated with them.

tony detroit , i don't have my tank set up yet, its a tall 65gallon. I've got the stand built, and have purchased my filtration equipt, and have some really good ideas from this site,i'm just doing some research on different things to get an understanding for what i'm getting into. MY wife is adament on always having clear water and quiet pumps

Well my personal preference is this. I've been doing this for a while now and have set up multiple tanks.
Skim Well
Have good, vigorous, random waterflow
Do not Overstock
Plan your livestock, and aquascaping
Grow Plants
Keep Salinity, and temperature as steady as possible
Use RO/DI water
DO NOT SKIMP ON BUYING GOOD FILTRATION AND EQUIPMENT
20% waterchange weekly
New carbon every other week
Filterpads weekly, or sometimes 2x a week
Low sand bed, or no sand at all
I encourage the growth of macroalgae if you can, if not, well, no big deal, but they will help you with waste removal.
Run ozone or UV. I prefer ozone. IME ozone is better for water quality, UV is better for parasite prevention. But both perform roughly the same task, and ozone is cheaper and more efficient. Ozone will make your water sparkle.
If you are going with a reef there are even more things you can do.

you say a low sandbed ? why is that ? also planning on a fish only tank. sounds like great advice, thanks. there's so much to learn about saltwater, but the more i think about it, and the more knowledgable i become , the more interresting it gets. i can see why it's vital not to rush things, and i can also see why someone might want to. any other advice? anyone.

The deeper the sandbed the more crud that collects and decays and ruins your water quality.
This leads to
algae
nitrate
phosphate
poor growth
poor color
high DOC's
and overall a tank that could have been much easier and more efficient

I have no expirience with saltwater myself, but my dad used to run his diatom filter on his old saltwater tank if it ever got cloudy for some reason and it would clear it right up. Now we use it on our freshwater tnaks to get rid of tanins or anything that carbon helps or just to polish the water.
We just run it ocasionly for about 3-4 hours whenever it could be used or we have free time (about 1-2 a month)
